Position Responsibilities for

Student Worker Library Assistants

DeSales University – Trexler Library

The primary responsibility of the Student Library Assistant is to provide good service to our patrons.  Specific duties that the Library Assistant may perform include, but are not limited to:

General Duties

  • Check in and check out library materials at the desk including anatomical models on reserve
  • Shelve returned library materials.
  • Shelf reading and duties as assigned.
  • Opening/Closing – according to shift, the student worker assists with the opening or closing procedures in the library.
  • COVID19 – Follow all safety procedures as directed by the CDC, DeSales University and Library guidelines.
    • As of March 2, 2022, DeSales University is mask-optional for all students, employees, and visitors.

    • Individuals are not required to wear a face covering when indoors. Of course, anyone is free to continue to use a mask, if preferred. 
    • Routine cleaning and disinfecting of areas of the library and the Circulation Desk as needed.
    • Assist with monitoring the number of patrons in specific areas of the library.

Service

  • Provide directional assistance to patrons (e.g., Where is this book located?)
  • Change toner cartridges, and refill paper trays in printers and photocopiers; assist with questions concerning library computers, printers and photocopiers,
  • Turn on or shut down library computers as requested by the staff member on duty.

Projects

  • Check Blackboard for posted announcements, projects, assignments, and substitute requests.
  • Complete assigned work projects in a timely manner.
  • Assist with maintenance of general collections, special collections and reference stacks, as well as periodical holdings, including shelving, shelf reading and shifting of the collection.
  • Other projects as assigned.

Behavior

  • Report for work on time.
  • Display exemplary attitude and work habits, including trustworthiness and attention to detail.
  • Dress is casual. Use good judgement when dressing and grooming for work. If staff views a student worker's attire as inappropriate for work, they reserve the right to inform the worker.
  • Work at designated tasks and locations.  Inform your supervisor when leaving your assigned station – i.e., when leaving for the day and/or when pulled for another job.
  • While on duty, no personal incoming or outgoing telephone calls are permitted on either the library telephone or personal cell phones. 
  • Find a substitute when you are unable to report for your scheduled work time. Post on Blackboard as soon as you know you are unable to work your shift.
  • Notify a supervisor when switching a shift with another student worker.
  • Abide by rules listed on the Contract signed by all student workers upon employment at the Trexler Library, including dress code and personal conduct.
