Graduate Student Resources: Academic Writing Basics

The purpose of this help guide is to provide a library collection of resources and tips to assist students in the process of writing a thesis.

Writing a Thesis Statement

A thesis statement is a clear statement of your position in an argument essay. It sums up your topic, your position, and a brief "why" for your argument. This sentence generally appears at the end of your introduction.

A strong thesis:

  • takes some sort of stand.
  • justifies discussion.
  • expresses one main idea.
  • is specific.
