Physician Assistant Program: Medical Writing - IMRaD

The resources on this guide are selected to support the curriculum designed for students in the DeSales PA program and especially to aid in their research assignments.

What is IMRaD?

IMRaD is an acronym for Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion.  It describes the format for the sections of a research report.  It is often used in the social sciences, as well as in the STEM fields.

In this format, you present your research and discuss your methods for gathering research. Each section of the IMRAD structure can take several paragraphs to develop.

IMRD: The Parts of a Research Paper

IMRaD Outline

1. Introduction

  • Why was the paper done?
    • The problem
    • The importance
    • Research Question (PICO)
    • Hypothesis/objective

A good introduction should:

  • Tell why the reader should find the paper interesting
  • Explain the objective of investigation
  • Lead to the hypothesis

2. Methods

  • What has been done?
  • How was the study done?
  • When was the study done?.

A good methods section should:

  • Provide all the information needed to allowe another researcher to repeat the experiment
  • Be organized chronologically

3. Results

  • What did you find?
    • Presents new knowledge
    • Is the core of the paper

A good results section should:

  • Present results simply and clearly
  • Report data objectively
  • Include negative data (what was not found)
  • Include tables and figures when necessary

4. Discussion

  • What does it mean and so what?
    • Explains meanings and implications of the results
    • Were the objectives achieved?

A good discussion section should:

  • Not repeat what's already been said
  • Show how the results and interpreations argree (or not)
  • Is the hpothesis supported or not?
  • Weaknesses of the study

Original Research Vs. Review

Original research articles are based on an experiment or study.  The author(s) will report the purpose of the study, the research methodology, and results.  This is a familiar structure for original research articles > IMRaD: introduction, methods, results, and discussion.

Review articles summarize or synthesize content from earlier published research and are useful for surveying the literature ona specific research area.  Review articles can lead you to original research articles.
