Community Member FAQ

Can Community Members get a library card for the Trexler Library?

Yes. Members of the community who are not DeSales Students, Faculty or Staff, are welcome to become patrons of Trexler Library and utilize select library services and resources. The no-fee library card registration is good for one year.

Who is considered a Community Member?

Members of the community include: DeSales University Alumni, Chestnut Hill College students, local area residents, LVAIC University Faculty and Staff, Marywood University students, Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival and Summer Theatre Institute participants.

Please present a valid photo ID (Driver’s License, Marywood or Chestnut Hill ID) at the Circulation Desk when you are requesting a library card.

Can Community Members access the Trexler Library building?

The front entrance is currently DeSales University ID Card swipe access. Visitors to the Trexler Library should ring the front door bell or call 610-282-1100 x1266 and wait for the door to unlock.

Community Members who are not registered for a Trexler Library Card are asked to submit their valid photo ID at the Circulation Desk.

Can a Community Member check out books?

Yes. Community Members with a valid Trexler Library Card can check out up to FIVE BOOKS at a time. The loan period is 30 days and books may be renewed. This does not include Reference Books or Journals/Periodicals, which do not circulate, or books from our Popular Reading Collection, which are reserved for DeSales' students, faculty and staff.

Can Community Members check out Media (DVDs, CDs, etc).

No. Community members are unable to check out Media. Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival and Summer Theatre Institute participants may check out Media as this is a necessary part of the program.

Are there any fines or charges for overdue/lost library books?

The library does not charge daily overdue fines. However, if a book is more than 30 days overdue, the patron will be charged for the cost of the book and a $10 billing fee per book.

What other library services are available to Community Members?

Community Members can access the library's catalog and databases, the Internet, and Microsoft Office from the designated Public Access Computer located on the first floor. Usage is limited to two hours.

Photocopiers are available for your use at a cost of $.10 per page. We currently cannot accept credit cards as payment for copies. Please ask at the Circulation Desk for assistance to access the copiers.

What services are not available to Community Members?

Community Members are not able to check out Media (DVDs, CDs, etc). Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival and Summer Theatre Institute participants may check out media as this is a necessary part of the program.

Community Members do not have access to our Interlibrary Loan Service and are encouraged to go to their local public library for this service.

Printing is not available to Community Members. Please save your work to either the cloud (such as Google Drive or Dropbox) or to an external drive. Flash Drives are sold at the Circulation Desk for $4.00. Chestnut Hill College and Marywood University students can print using a personal login to access the web print function. Please contact professors or program administrators for this information.

Community Members can only access the library's online databases and journals through our designated Public Access Computer located on the first floor of the library.

Where can Community Members park when visiting the library?

Campus visitors should park in the Dooling Hall visitors’ section, DeSales University Center, Labuda Center, or Gambet Center parking lots. The Trexler Library lot is designated for students.
