Library Instruction: Library Instruction

This guide provides assistance for faculty members who want to include library research tools in their courses.

Why Library Instruction?

Students who are assigned projects requiring library research often lack basic library skills or are overwhelmed by the variety  of information resources available in  Trexler Library.

The Library Instruction Program at DeSales University is designed to teach students how to use the resources available here while developing skills for lifelong Information Literacy.

The library offers instruction sessions tailored to the needs of your students and your assignments.  Instruction librarians will introduce students to the resources and search strategies that are most appropriate for their assignments, topics and level of expertise.

In-Class Instruction

CalendarWhere, When and Who?

All teaching faculty are invited to take advantage of our library instruction program and schedule library sessions for their classes.  Sessions may be scheduled during regular class time (evening as well as day) in-person or virtually through Zoom.

BookWhat can be covered?

We strongly believe that course-related instruction connected with a real academic need is more effective than stand-alone or disconnected tours and library orientations.  In our teaching sessions we emphasize concepts and strategies as a means to achieve our mission of educating information literate individuals.

Call us to discuss your classes' specific needs.

bulbTips for a Successful Session

  • Contact the library at least two weeks prior to the session to reserve a room and talk with an instruction librarian.
  • Give a copy of the class assignment and/or syllabus to the librarian who will be meeting with your class
  • Accompany your class to the library session and add your comments and questions.
  • Direct your students back to a librarian if they need additional assistance.

Online Instruction

We can also provide Panopto recordings to highlight resources/library services  appropriate for your classes and your assignments.
